When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you actually play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. What’s going on? Anita Collins explains the fireworks that go off in musicians’ brains when they play, and examines some of the long-term positive effects of this mental workout.

When you answer the telephone, for example, your brain directs your body to reach for it as the nervous system responds to vibrating molecules of air by creating the subjective experience of a ringtone. We perceive this stimulation as sound and react to ti as if it actually exists, when in fact the sound is merely a fabrication of the brain. That fabrication is produced by a chain reaction that takes place when vibrating air molecules hit the eardrum. Without the nervous system, especially the brain, there is no such thing as sound. Rather, there is only the movement of air molecules.
(new paragraph) There is more to hearing a phone’s ringtone than just the movement of air molecules, however. Our mental creation of reality is based not only on the sensory information received but also on the cognitive processes that each of us might use to interact with the incoming information. A telephone ringing when we are expecting a call has a different meaning from its ringing at three o’clock in the morning when we are not expecting a call.

"Can I have a piece of the cake?"
*jokingly* “You should have gone on a run first.”
Sorry I snapped, but WTF? You’re kidding, right? I’ve literally never seen you at a healthy weight, or run more than a quarter of a block without stopping.
